The Treatment of Chronic Pain
Using NLP and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Chronic pain results from injury or illness that is unremitting. It has both a
physical component combined with mental and emotional characteristics. Many
chronic pain sufferers are treated with a pain medication protocol.
Unfortunately for some, the pain may not be controlled, or the medication’s
ability to help, wanes, often requiring stronger medication over time.
When the chronic pain pattern becomes established, it takes on a life of its
own separate from but existing parallel to the physical condition. Thus, the
person with chronic pain has both the lingering, and most times permanent
physical condition that creates the pain; but also has the resulting issues of
medication management, potential addiction, possible partial or total
disability. Most times this leads to an inability to sustain employment,
inhibited activity, and affected interpersonal relations.
What appears to help the chronic pain sufferer is learning how to
change his or her beliefs and to develop emotional and mental resources to deal
with issues. While Cognitive-Behavioral therapy has embraced the chronic pain
sufferer with specific interventions, NLP, also has its own processes and
techniques of intervention that are of help to the person. Together,
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and NLP, make a winning team as an effective mode
of intervention. This workshop will discuss how the two modalities can work
together to treat chronic pain.
